In the realm of law, few roles are as pivotal as that of a prosecutor. They are the guardians of justice, tasked with upholding the law and ensuring that those who break it are held accountable. In Henry County, one name stands out in this crucial role: Jeremy S. Bell. With years of experience and a commitment to justice, Jeremy has made significant contributions to helping the citizens of Henry County.

Background and Education
I graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Political Science. I attended law school at Indiana University McKinney School of Law. Where, after being certified to sit for the bar exam during my last semester of classes I graduated May 8th, 2004 and was admitted to the practice of law on May 17th, 2004.
I then returned to Henry County where I opened a law office in May of 2004. Where for over the past twenty years I have provided representation for clients in bankruptcies, family law, and other general legal matters including representation of government boards such as the Henry County Solid Waste District.
In October, 2004 I was hired as a deputy prosecutor in the Henry County Prosecutor’s Office and have served in that position for the past twenty-one years. Working for and learning from three outstanding Henry County Prosecutors, Kit Crane, Joe Bergacs, and Michael Mahoney. In this role I have represented Henry County in all aspects of criminal cases including the prosecution of major felony jury trials.
Role as a Prosecutor
As a deputy prosecutor for Henry County, I have taken on a wide range of cases, from minor offenses to major felonies. My approach to prosecution is characterized by a commitment to fairness and justice. I believe that every case deserves careful consideration and that the rights of both victims and defendants must be respected.
Key Responsibilities
In his role, I am responsible for:
Working with Law Enforcement: I work closely with all law enforcement agencies that serve Henry County helping prepare search warrants and providing legal guidance.
Evaluating Evidence: I meticulously review evidence to determine the strength of a case before proceeding with charges.
Preparing Cases: I prepare cases for trial, which includes gathering witness statements, expert testimonies, and other relevant materials.
Representing the State: In court, I represent the State of Indiana, presenting evidence and arguments to support the prosecution's case.
Negotiating Plea Deals: I engages in negotiations with defense attorneys to reach fair plea agreements that serve justice while considering the circumstances of each case.
Proven and Tested
I have tried numerous bench trials and jury trials to guilty verdicts including robbery, escape, sexual misconduct with a minor, and a multi-count child molesting case where the defendant was found guilty on all counts. I argued for the maximum sentence and the Court imposed a 110-year sentence to the Department of Corrections, one of the longest sentences imposed by a Henry County Court.
In 2021 I was the first person in the Henry County Prosecutors Office to petition and get court approval to use a courthouse facility dog using a law passed in 2019 to allow child witnesses the use of a comfort animal during testimony in criminal cases. l will continue to utilize the Prosecutor Office’s resources to empower survivors to seek justice, and will continue to advocate for lengthy sentences for defendants that hurt children.
My ability to navigate complex legal issues and present compelling arguments has earned respect among peers and the community alike.
Community Engagement
Beyond my courtroom duties, I have participated in the New Start class, a program for high school age first time traffic offenders, the Sheriffs Camp mock trial numerous times, and more recently Juvenile Probation’s attendance intervention program.
Challenges Faced
The role of a prosecutor is not without its challenges, including:
Resource Limitations: Like many public offices, the prosecutor's office often operates with limited resources, making it challenging to manage caseloads effectively. I have learned from operating my own law office for twenty years how to effectively run an office on limited resources, and keep cost limited.
Public Scrutiny: Prosecutors are frequently under public scrutiny, especially in high-profile cases. I have learned to navigate this pressure while maintaining his focus on justice.
Balancing Justice and Fairness: Striking the right balance between seeking justice for victims and treating defendants fairly can be difficult. I approach each case with empathy, and understanding that every individual has a story.
Conclusion
My dedication to justice and community engagement has earned me respect in Henry County. My journey from law school to the prosecutor's office is a testament to my commitment to upholding the law and serving the public. As I continue to navigate the complexities of the legal system, my focus remains on ensuring that justice is served fairly and compassionately.
